I went down to the races to see what I could see I brought a week of earnings and a flask You went down to the races, well John, what did you see? An '87 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am I laid my money down and then I had a look around She turned and spilled her drink all over me To make it up she took my cup and led me to her pickup truck When we were done (she'd had her fun) My car had lost and hers had won My money gone and she said, "John, I'll make it up. You'll see." Will she drive me to drinking? Yes she will! Will she spend all my money? She just might. Will she drive me to drinking? Yes she will! But my girl will drive me home again at the end of the night. Not a week had passed and I was right back at the track Put my money on the same car as before I overheard a writer say it had a different driver It came in first and my head burst I filled my glass and then my purse I ran to shake the driver's hand And thank him for the score After the victory lap the driver stopped the car, Pulled over and then opened up the door Took that helmet off and I'd never felt such a shock It was the very girl who spilled my drink the week before She smiled and said "Hop in, my man Can you name my car?" I can An '87 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Will she drive me to drinking? Yes she will! Will she spend all my money? She just might. Will she drive me to drinking? Yes she will! But my girl will drive me home again at the end of the night.

I was raised in southern Texas, child I was brought up to be kind But I got mad when my friend's dad Belt-whipped my behind I ran into my bedroom, Lord I fell onto my knees I prayed to the god I loved so much To set my mind at ease I lived in Surfer's Paradise In the Southern Hemisphere My visa was good for three months But I stayed most of the year I went down to the airport, man They scanned my passport there They said "Son, you're done, you've had your fun." Then they banned me for a year Good God, I was framed by the Lord I love so much Framed by the Lord I love He stripped me of my paradise and took away my drug He picked apart my curfew, man, he spilled out all my beans I was framed by the Lord I love so much for tryin' to be me

Good Ann, rise and shine Pull your hair back, you'll look just fine I know you don't remember last night Well you and me we had a hell of a time We crossed the valley in my Cutlass Supreme We crossed our hearts we'd marry this coming spring This coming spring, HEY! Pretty Ann, why don't you have a seat Rest your weary legs, I'll bring you a drink I know you're confused, you say your headache stings You say that you can't remember a damn thing Well that really hurts! Because last night I made you my queen We left the Irish Bar on State and 15th We barely made a scene, HEY! Good Ann, I saw you at the bar I asked you if you'd come to my car. You shook your head no, so sad but still I brought you a greyhound with a crushed up white pill Well it really worked! We crossed the valley in my Cutlass Supreme We crossed our hearts we'd marry this coming spring This coming spring, HEY! Ro ... your boat down stream Hyp ... hypnotize me while Nol ... my angels sing, my voices scream Rohypnol, You make lovin' easy We crossed the valley in my Cutlass Supreme We crossed our hearts we'd marry this coming spring This coming spring.

Someone better call the doctor Daddy's finally off his rocker They found him roaming naked in the street Oh no boys, here comes the Sheriff To collect his whiskey tariff Pay him that he leaves our moonshine be. Grandma’s in the bathtub yeah She's cookin' up a batch She's got a group of Boy Scouts come at noon People are suspicious here But no one dares to ask She cooks her shit up with a silver spoon Bless the hands that prepared this mess Bless the man who would not confess To the sins that keep his head above a drowning world Kick the shards of a fallen sky Damned if you do, damned if I die And you leave my body at the bottom of the ocean floor Oooh Kiss the kids goodbye Oooh Because the world ends tonight Here comes the mayor, dressed in black Pinstripe suit and Cadillac Comin' by to make his daily rounds Mama brings them to the room There they spend the afternoon Close your eyes, don't listen to the sound

You gotta heal the pain And don’t come ‘round unless you’ve somethin’ to say There’s a hole in my coffin There’s a hole in my bed And every time I lay down The rain falls on my head And there’s no rest for the weary There’s no sleep for the dead The Rattlesnake he shakes his tired head There’s a run in my stocking There’s a burn on my dress I’m wearing black at the mass That celebrates my death And there’s no wardrobe for corpses Yeah, man, fashion is dead The rattlesnake he shakes and I turn red Gotta live strong You gotta heal the pain And don’t come ‘round unless you’ve somethin’ to say

I seen your picture, oh girl Man, where did you get all those curls? I spend most the time in my cell, The food here’s no good, but ah well. And Teri, have you found someone to keep you warm at night? I’d do it myself but I can’t Cuz I’m on the inside. There’s no pencils here—they’re too sharp So they’ve got me writing in marker. I got beat up by Willie Chavez, He said “Next time I see you you’re dead.” And Teri, I’m scared as hell and I hope that our baby’s alright. I’d help you, ya know, but I can’t Cuz I’m on the inside. Thanks for your letter, Jason. Tell me, what kind of trouble are you in? I’d visit but our baby’s ill And I can’t afford to buy pills. But please think of me when you close your eyes at night And picture me here waiting for you on the outside. Hey oh, take me home. I know what I feel but I can’t put it down and I miss you my family, I miss my home town I know what I did and I know it was wrong And I can’t escape but I’ll send you this song And Teri have you found someone to keep you warm at night? Oh God get me outta here soon, If I can’t bust outta here soon I’m gonna die. Please God get me home to my girl Before I die.

Last Train 02:48
Last Train I hear those chains rattling on just like the tune of a sad sad song. The hammer hits the stone just like the beat of a lonely drum. I’ve got these shackles on so I’ll just labor on till Kingdom come. I’ll labor on until I’m dead and gone. I hear my bones rattling on, it’s my self-composed requiem. I’ll do the dead man’s dance, I’ll spit and kick to my last breath. Take my blood and my sweat, just take my last regret. Take your pound of flesh, but try to leave me some. Chorus The tally tolled, the auction sold one and all familiar souls. The trial’s done, canary’s sung, and you and I have all been hung. You weary ones lay down your load, your rest is short, long is the road, And heavy weigh the chain upon your soul. The Hammer drops my back’s what breaks, My soul is rocked when these stones won’t shake. The Requiem Mass plays through the day, and my old bones dance away. My spirit slips those chains to take a rest in the shade. You’ll see my bones dancin’ on to that last train.

Got a suit made of ethanol Swim in oceans of alcohol Shake a leg, shake a modern film Break an egg, take a yellow pill Clean your house, paint your parliament Grow a meal, where's your money spent And just when you expect it least You find yourself In the belly of the beast Light a match, light a rag and watch it glow Toss the bottle and it explodes When all the tanks and all the guns are on one side You do what you can, baby, to survive Paint your house, clean your parliament Grow a meal when you money's spent And just when you expect it least You find yourself In the belly of the beast Lizard lips and desert tits in silent space Show the liars who run this place A sock-eyed fish, a corporate kiss, a damned-up Snake Keep the salmon from their home lake Cast a vote, cast a secret glance Cast a spell and blow up the dams And just when you expect it least You find yourself In the belly of the beast Parasol and a worn out dress Too much rouge and a sagging breast Wash our widows in turpentine It's good enough for the boys workin' in the mine Cast a vote, cast a secret glance Cast a spell and pull up your pants And just when you expect it least You find yourself You are the beast

My partner laid dying in the cedar and sage, He said, “I wouldn’t live too long now anyhow at my age, Don’t cry for my soul, though I wait now at the gates.” I buried my friend in the cedar and sage. I’ve spent long lonely nights on this high desert plain. My companions, the coyotes, their sadness is plain. I’ve been adrift with the wind, now I’ll lay here where I land In the cedar and sage. I laid my grave in the cedar and sage. I don’t want to die but who knows at my age. Don’t look for my tombstone, my memorial’s just these: The cedar and sage. But my time’s not yet come on this high desert stage. The ambush got my friend but made one grave mistake. Thought they’d kill me now they lay face down in the sage, And the cedar stands watch as the devil’s own page Sees them swiftly down to the fires that rage. I laid my grave in the cedar and sage. I don’t want to die but who knows with my ways. Don’t look for my tombstone, my memorial’s just these: The cedar and sage.

So Jon be good to Richie You've been friends for such a long time Surely you see how hard it can be To stand in your shade while you shine He sang "I'll be there for you" in Atlanta And he meant every word that he sang He co-wrote your songs For thirty years long Hopin' you'd feel the same way So bring him back Cuz that boy, his whole life he gave you all that he had Now brothers will brawl, hell, they'll rumble They'll fight tooth and nail, blood and bone But it's a long way from New Jersey to L.A. And they'll still welcome each other home So bring him back Cuz that boy, his whole life he gave you all that he had So Jon be good to Richie You've been friends for such a long time Surely you see how hard it can be To stand in your shade while you shine

Kosovo 07:09
Kosovo--there isn't anywhere I wouldn't go Except, that is, for Kosovo I sent my baby there with a kiss And wouldn't you know it, I haven't heard from him since He could be out there wandering the streets Or worse yet, buying beautiful women their drinks He could've crossed the border with a Croat I wouldn't in the least be too surprised about that And the thought isn't so absurd He's being served dinner by some voluptuous Serb And you're right, I might be jaded Balkan states are overrated Leave the Mediterranean Come home darlin' And you're right, I might be jaded Balkan states are overrated All the women in Croatia Keep on calling
